Saturday 7th January 2017: –
I began the day with an early morning run around the lake beside John and Evelyn’s house where we had begun our sail yesterday. After breakfast this morning, John and I spent time getting me set up to begin teaching at FAU next week. Lots to think about, including how to access the online student platform and how to begin to think about my teaching inputs for UG and Graduate students as well as thinking about how to structure the assessment for my class. We left John and Evelyn’s house around noon and travelled to Boca Raton where I picked up my hire car – a nice blue coloured Accent. I followed John to FAU (it took me a little while to get used to the automatic again and the roads) and then arrived at my apartment in FAU campus. It is terrific – so spacious and with its own kitchen, separate bedroom, living area and even has its own washer and drier. We spent time getting my things into the apartment and then drove to the grocery store where I loaded up on all the things I need. By this time the weather had changed completely from yesterday, with heavy rain and grey skies.
John and I then put the groceries into the apartment then he showed me around campus. We visited the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, which has around 15 Faculty members. It was delightful to see my name up on the door outside the fourth office along the corridor! A really nice office with my own computer, printer and plenty of bookshelf space. After a stroll around, John then left me to settle in. For the first time since i arrived here, I was on my own. I spent the evening unpacking my things and getting everything in place. I cooked my first dinner on my own chicken and pasta with peppers and onions. This took me back to my bachelor days in Partick! The apartment is now beginning to look really good, and I am so grateful to John and Evelyn for all the things they have given me – plates, utensils, silverware, bedding, a slow cooker and a coffee maker to name just a few.
The next stage is to meet the staff and students on Monday …
